The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has officially launched newly refurbished Z9 helicopters acquired from the China Aviation Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC).
The commissioning ceremony took place on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at the Kenya Army Corps of Aviation, Embakasi Garrison, presided over by Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Tarus.
KDF highlighted that this collaboration with CATIC marks a significant advancement in enhancing Kenya’s military capabilities.
The partnership covers various areas, including military equipment procurement, technology transfer, joint training, and strategic cooperation, all aimed at bolstering Kenya’s operational readiness.
In his address, Gen. Tarus praised CATIC’s support, calling the partnership a pivotal development for Kenya Army Aviation in safeguarding the nation and promoting regional security.
He stated that the new helicopters would significantly enhance the effectiveness of soldiers in carrying out their duties.
“Our partnership fosters a culture of collaboration and trust. Together, we will continue to innovate, improve, and push the boundaries of military aviation.
Success in the airspace relies not only on advanced technology but also on the strength of the relationships between nations,” Gen. Tarus remarked.

Li Houding, Vice President of CATIC, expressed optimism about the collaboration, emphasizing its potential to leverage aviation technology expertise for accelerated progress.
“Through joint research and development and the sharing of best practices in aircraft maintenance, we aim to enhance the capabilities of Kenya Army Aviation,” he noted.
The Z9 helicopter is primarily designed for troop transport, serving as an advanced asset in the Kenya Army’s aviation fleet.
However, concerns have been raised regarding the safety of KDF helicopters, following several accidents reported in recent years.
In April 2024, a KDF helicopter crashed in the Sindar area near the West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties border, resulting in the deaths of ten occupants, including then Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla.
This incident followed a crash on November 20, 2023, where three individuals were injured when a helicopter crashed while en route to collect Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination papers at Wajir Airport.
On the same day, a cargo helicopter delivering food aid to flood-affected residents also crashed in Buna, Wajir North.
Furthermore, several KDF officers lost their lives in a helicopter accident in Lamu on September 18 of the same year.
In June 2021, ten KDF officers were killed, and thirteen others were injured when a military chopper crashed in the Oltepesi area, just a few kilometers from Kisamis in Kajiado.
