The Kenya Fisheries Service (KFS), alongside security officials in Homa Bay County, has successfully destroyed illegal fishing nets valued at Sh4 million.
County Commissioner Moses Lilan announced that the nets were seized during routine operations at various beaches around Lake Victoria.
The destruction of the confiscated gear was carried out following the issuance of a court order.
Christine Etiegni, KFS Deputy Director for the Western region, emphasized that harmful fishing practices have significantly contributed to the decline of fish populations in the lake.
“We will intensify crackdowns to eradicate the use of unauthorized nets that promote unsustainable fishing in Lake Victoria,” Etiegni stated.
She noted that KFS is collaborating with Beach Management Unit (BMU) officials to uphold order in the lake’s fishing activities.
During the nets’ destruction at Homa Bay police station, Etiegni highlighted the importance of involving local fishermen in awareness campaigns to encourage lawful fishing practices.
She also pointed out that illegal fishing gear, encroachment on breeding grounds, and unlicensed fishing pose significant challenges to the industry.
According to Etiegni, the beaches in Suba North, Karachuonyo, and Suba South constituencies are particularly affected by detrimental fishing practices.
“Many people rely on fishing for their livelihoods, which is why we are committed to promoting the sustainable exploitation of the lake,” she added.
Commissioner Lilan stressed that restoring order in Lake Victoria also involves combating drug trafficking in the waters.
He warned fishermen against falling victim to unscrupulous individuals soliciting funds for purported security services.
Lilan revealed that they have identified specific beaches prone to illegal fishing activities and underscored the urgent need for fishermen to register their boats and obtain licenses by January next year.
“We have laws governing fishing practices in Lake Victoria, and violators will face consequences.
Those involved in drug trafficking and child labor in the lake are equally criminals and will be prosecuted,” Lilan affirmed.
