A section of Kenya Kwanza leaders has strongly defended the rollout of the Social Health Insurance Authority (SHA) amidst growing criticism.
Speaking after attending a church service at St. Paul II Chepterwai Catholic Church, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa and President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet urged Kenyans to embrace the new health scheme, emphasizing its transformative potential in providing affordable and quality healthcare.
Ichung’wa dismissed the criticism of the program, urging Kenyans to ignore what he described as misinformation from political detractors.
“We urge Kenyans to ignore the misinformation being peddled by some leaders and register in large numbers to benefit from this initiative,” Ichung’wa stated.
In a separate event in Khwisero, Kakamega County, Ichung’wa called on politicians to actively support SHA, highlighting the importance of educating the public on its benefits.
He also accused critics of the scheme of being sympathizers of past corruption at the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), where public funds were allegedly misused in procurement scandals.
Ichung’wa also addressed the recent visits by church leaders to State House, dismissing social media criticism of the visits.
“Anyone can visit the House on the Hill with the blessings of President William Ruto,” he said, defending the church leaders’ actions.
Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka and Matungu MP Peter Nabulindo voiced similar support for the SHA, stressing that the initiative is a crucial step towards ensuring that all Kenyans have access to healthcare without financial strain.
They also dismissed the opposition to the program as politically motivated, affirming the importance of the health scheme for the well-being of the nation.
“This is a critical step towards ensuring all Kenyans have access to healthcare without financial strain,” they emphasized.
