Kenya has launched a major rhino conversation effort with the introduction of new ear- notching and transmitter fitting exercise in tsavo West’s intensive Protrction zone (IPZ).
The initiative aimed at enhancing the protection of the endagered Africa black rhinoceros, was officially unveiled by cabinet secretary for Tourism and Wildlife,Hon. Rebecca Miano.
The event held at Tsavo West National Park, was attedend by key officials,including Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga, and KWS Board Chairman Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Walter Raria Koipaton,alongside variious conversation partners.
In her address, CS Miano emphasized Kenya’s leadership in rhino conversation stating , “This exercise demonstrates our commitment to conserving one of the world’s most iconic and endangered species the African black rhinoceros.
Our efforts will ensure that rhinos continues to thrive for generations to come.”
Kenya’s rhino population now stands at 1,977 including 1,004 black rhino an 971 southern white rhinos.
The country also hosts the last two remaining northern white rhinos which are critically endangered.
The exercise involves fitting tracking transmitters and ear- notching 20-25 rhinos, allowing for near real-time monitoring of their movements.
Supported by partners like the Tsavo Trust the initiative users LORAWAN enable technology to provide critical data that will guide conservation decisions and enhance protection efforts across Tsavo’s vast landscape.
Prof. Kanga highlighted the importance of this initiative in advancing Kenya’s Black Rhino Action plan and white Rhino conservation Strategy.
He paraised the work of field veterinarians, rangers and monitoring staff.
CS Miano also streeed that this initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader Biodiversity goals, contributing to sustainable development and supporting loacal communities.
“We are safeguarding our heritage and securing a future that benefits all,” she said.
This exersice raiforces Kenya’s position as a global leader in conservation , showcasing its dedication to protecting endangered species while promoting environmrntal sustainability.
