Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) announced on Thursday that its Madaraka Express Passenger Service Train will experience delays due to a fire incident in Mtito Andei, Makueni County.
The fire, which broke out on Tuesday, October 29, affected sections DK 345 and DK 347 between the Emali railway and Nkusso areas.
Police and KRC personnel responded quickly, managing to contain the blaze. However, the fire damaged overhead fiber optic cables in certain areas, causing minor disruptions to train operations.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In a statement released on Thursday, KRC informed passengers that the Mombasa to Nairobi train, originally scheduled to leave at 3:00 PM, would be delayed by approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.
“We wish to notify our customers that the afternoon Express train from Mombasa to Nairobi will be delayed by 1 hour and 40 minutes,” the statement read.
Conversely, the Nairobi to Mombasa afternoon Express train will run on its usual schedule. KRC extended its apologies to passengers for the inconvenience.
The Madaraka Express serves a total of 13 destinations between Mombasa and Suswa, and with this delay, many travelers find their plans disrupted.
Typically, the journey takes just over five hours, with the train expected to arrive in Nairobi at 8:18 PM.
The afternoon Express train includes a stop at Voi, allowing passengers to take in the beautiful Kenyan landscape, which features lakes, savannahs, and wildlife, including elephants.
In addition to the afternoon service, there is also a night Express train operating between Nairobi and Mombasa, departing both cities simultaneously at 10:00 PM.
Travelers can book their tickets online for the SGR Express trains by dialing *699#. First-class fares are set at sh 3,000, while Economy fares are available for sh 1,000.
