The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled plans for a strategic partnership with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) aimed at bolstering tax literacy among students nationwide.
This innovative collaboration is set to yield bespoke tax e-resources tailored explicitly for learners operating within the framework of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Through the infusion of tax education into pivotal subjects such as Business Studies, Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, and Social Studies, the initiative seeks to furnish students with a fundamental grasp of taxation dynamics and its wider ramifications within society.
Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga of the KRA, in a recent engagement with the leadership of KICD, underscored the pivotal role of introducing tax education at an early developmental stage.
He accentuated the direct correlation between taxation and its manifold impacts on both individuals and society, underscoring the imperative of equipping young minds with a nuanced understanding of tax-related matters.
“By acquainting students with the rudiments of taxation early on, we cultivate informed and conscientious citizens, thereby fostering a societal ethos that upholds the principles of fairness and efficiency within the tax framework,” Mr. Wattanga emphasized.
This groundbreaking collaboration between KRA and KICD is slated to commence at the primary and secondary school levels, with provisions for expansion into tertiary education, thereby encompassing prospective taxpayers within its ambit.
Dr. Samuel Obudho, the Senior Deputy Director of TVET, lauded the efficacy of this collaborative endeavor in reaching a broad spectrum of learners.
He underscored the development of cutting-edge tax literacy digital resources, complete with simulated environments, as instrumental in molding students’ perceptions and attitudes toward taxation.
“This partnership serves as a potent conduit for KRA to engage with a diverse audience,” Dr. Obudho remarked.
The digital content generated through this synergistic alliance is poised to cater not only to students across various educational tiers but also to the wider populace, nurturing a collective sense of accountability and stewardship vis-à-vis the tax ecosystem.
