Journalists across Kenya are staging a peaceful protest against police brutality and intimidation of reporters covering anti-government demonstrations.
The protest is a response to recent incidents targeting media professionals.
The procession, led by Kenya Editors Guild President Zubeida Kananu and Kenya Union of Journalists Secretary General Eric Odour, began with a stop at Jogoo House.
There, they delivered a petition to Acting Inspector General Douglas Kanja, which was received by Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango.
The group is now heading to Teleposta Towers to present the same petition to the Ministry of Information and Communications.
This demonstration comes in the wake of troubling incidents involving journalists.
The arrest of veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho on July 17 and the shooting of Kameme TV journalist Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki have fueled the call for this protest.
These events have highlighted the growing concerns about the safety of journalists in Kenya.
An X Space forum is planned for 8:00 pm, where journalists and other stakeholders will gather to review the day’s events and discuss future actions.
This forum will serve as a platform for further dialogue on how to address the challenges facing the media in Kenya.
