Ali Mohammed, Kenya’s climate change envoy, has been elected as the new chairperson of the Africa Group of Negotiators (AGN), succeeding Ephraim Mwepya Shitima from Zambia, who held the position for two years.
“Ali Mohammed was selected as the new chairperson after electronic voting that lasted for two days,” it was announced on Thursday, February 29.
Speaking at the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi, Ali expressed his happiness that the leadership of AGN now resides in the Eastern Africa Region, encompassing 14 African countries from Sudan, Eritrea, and Mauritius to Seychelles and Madagascar.

We are immensely honored and grateful for the confidence placed in us and assure our full commitment to providing the required leadership,” Ali stated.
He also emphasized that under his leadership, AGN would advocate for the implementation of various decisions made in different Conference of Parties, including the most recent one held in Dubai last year.
