At Kibera Law Court on Thursday, a man was condemned to death for his involvement in a robbery with violence incident that occurred in Nairobi’s Dagoretti area in January of this year.
The court heard that Samuel Macharia Muthoni, also known as Samido Macharia, along with accomplices not identified in court, robbed Geoffrey Omweri Ontita of his mobile phone valued at Sh 23,725 on January 8, 2024.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the robbery involved the suspect using physical violence against the victim, hitting him with a beer bottle on the face.
Reports from the ODPP revealed that Ontita was attacked while opening the shop where he works as an attendant, with a group of assailants demanding his phone.
Despite resisting, the victim was subjected to strikes and kicks, and one of the assailants hit him with a beer bottle above the eye, causing bleeding. Eventually, the victim surrendered his phone, after which the group proceeded to rob his colleague who came to his aid.
The victims managed to raise an alarm, prompting the intervention of passersby, which led to the suspects fleeing the scene.
The ODPP stated that Ontita and his colleague were able to identify one of the assailants as someone who operated a nearby bar.
The incident was reported to Riruta Police Station for further investigation.
