In Mburi village, Njukiini, Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, a tragic incident unfolded when a middle-aged man was fatally beaten by furious residents on suspicion of murdering the night watchman at Mburi Christian Primary School and hiding his body in a classroom.
According to reports from Mburi village residents, the suspect allegedly confessed to his involvement in the watchman’s killing, identifying others who were with him that night.
Despite attempts by local leader Njukii-ini MCA Timothy Kariuki to calm the situation, the anger among villagers prevailed, leading to the fatal lynching of the suspect late at night.
Timothy Kariuki expressed his helplessness in diffusing the tense situation, stating, “I could not help him as villagers were very angry. I tried to intervene but my efforts were in vain during the incident at 11 pm.”
The disturbing chain of events began with the alleged killing of the night watchman on Saturday.
The discovery of the watchman’s body without trousers in a classroom on Monday morning deeply shocked the community and disrupted normal activities at Mburi Primary School.
Peter Kinyua voiced the community’s frustration, highlighting, “These criminals are stripping men and stealing their belongings at night, causing us great distress.”
Mary Mwaniki, a teacher at Mburi Primary School, described the emotional impact on the students, saying, “Learners arriving at school found the watchman’s body abandoned in the classroom without trousers. It was a heartbreaking sight.”
In response to the incident, residents of Mburi and surrounding areas are calling on security agencies to intensify efforts against criminal gangs operating in the region.
Joseph Wanjohi expressed the community’s frustration with the justice system, stating, “We took matters into our own hands because criminals arrested are often released by the courts.”
The remains of the suspect were transferred to Kerugoya Hospital mortuary following the fatal lynching.
Meanwhile, Gichugu Sub-County Police Commander Johnson Wachira, while confirming the incident, emphasized the importance of upholding the law and urged against vigilante actions.
The tragedy in Mburi village underscores the challenges faced by communities grappling with crime and the complex dynamics surrounding public safety and justice in rural Kenya.
It serves as a stark reminder of the need for effective law enforcement and community support to address underlying issues contributing to such incidents.
