Kisumu will host its annual fish fiesta celebration this weekend, with the organizers hoping to use the event to promote tourism and celebrate the rich heritage of the city.
The event, which will run for three days starting Thursday, will highlight the importance of Lake Victoria as a vital resource.
Governor Anyang Nyong’o shared that this Signature Event will not only focus on Kisumu’s rich cultural heritage but will also be a platform to showcase the city’s dedication to environmental sustainability, economic empowerment, and cultural preservation.
“It will not be a mere event but a testament to our collective commitment to environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment,” remarked Governor Nyong’o, whose speech was read on his behalf by Farida Salim, CECM for Tourism, Trade, and Marketing.
To kick off the festivities, the event will feature a city-wide clean-up on Wednesday, demonstrating the local administration’s commitment to environmental conservation.
The clean-up is a symbolic gesture that reflects the community’s respect for nature and its desire to keep the environment clean.
Throughout the festival, attendees will participate in a range of engaging activities.
Plenary discussions will focus on the fish value chain, tourism, and economic development, and explore the significance of Lake Victoria.
Governor Nyong’o noted, “From production to processing, marketing to consumption, every aspect of the fish value chain plays a vital role in tourism development for our visitors, furthermore, in sustaining livelihoods and driving economic growth.”
The festival will also feature a Fishing Village exhibition showcasing the diverse aquatic life in Lake Victoria and demonstrating the traditional and modern fishing practices that coexist in the area.
Cultural performances, including music and dance, will add to the vibrant atmosphere.
Governor Nyong’o mentioned that these performances will captivate and engage the audience, showcasing the essence of the region’s heritage.
In addition to the cultural entertainment, the event will include adrenaline-pumping boat races, Mr and Miss Tourism contests, Mr and Miss Flex competitions, and Mr and Miss Strong events.
One of the highlights will be the Luo Traditional Wrestling, a marquee showpiece that illustrates the community’s spirit and strength.
As part of the celebrations, festival-goers will also get to witness the legendary snake, Omieri, representing ancient tales and local folklore.
The Grand Fiesta will culminate with a spectacular fireworks display, symbolizing unity and hope.
Governor Nyong’o expressed gratitude to the event’s organizers, sponsors, participants, and volunteers for their efforts in bringing the festival to life.
He also encouraged media representatives to cover the event and share the stories that emerged.
“Through the Grand Fish Fiesta, we aim to not only celebrate Lake Victoria and the Fish Value Chain but also promote sustainable tourism, economic empowerment, and culture within our community and beyond,” concluded Governor Nyong’o.
