The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Nairobi County Chapter has partnered with boda boda operators to address safety concerns and enhance the business environment for riders.
This collaboration was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Wednesday.
Maxwell Okoth, Chairman of the KNCCI Nairobi County Health Sector, stated that the partnership aims to tackle pressing issues faced by boda boda riders, who are crucial to Nairobi’s economy.
“We have signed an MOU with the Boda Boda Association to reduce accidents.
The Kenya Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Committee will provide first aid training, and I urge Kenyans of goodwill to support us in this endeavor,” Okoth said.
Alex Kulema, Chairman of the Boda Boda Association of Nairobi, expressed appreciation for the partnership, highlighting its significance for the boda boda industry.
“We are thrilled that the Kenya Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Committee is collaborating with us to tackle the challenges in our sector.
We are grateful for the training services aimed at saving lives,” he noted.
The initiative primarily focuses on addressing the alarming accident rate within the boda boda sector.
According to statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), approximately 11,500 crashes involving boda bodas occur across the country each year.
James Mwaura, Chairman of KNCCI Nairobi County, emphasized the importance of training and collaboration.
“Continued training and bringing more partners on board is crucial.
The boda boda sector has been overlooked for too long, as highlighted by NTSA’s concerning statistics,” he stated.
The initiative will commence with first aid training sessions designed to equip boda boda riders with essential life-saving skills, significantly reducing fatalities and injuries.
The program will be implemented in phases, prioritizing safety and first aid training, followed by additional healthcare services for riders and their families.
KNCCI is a membership-based trade support institution dedicated to protecting the commercial and industrial interests of the Kenyan business community, advocating for a favorable commercial, trade, and investment environment to support enterprise growth.
