The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced a special arrangement for eight players from the women’s national U-17 football team.
Allowing them to take their national exams while also participating in the U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
The exams are scheduled for the next two months, coinciding with the tournament.
This decision follows a request from MP Irene Mayaka, who highlighted the conflict between the exam schedule and the World Cup.
Initially, KNEC had proposed that the players might need to forego the exams or reschedule them for the following year to participate in the World Cup.
However, thanks to advocacy efforts, the players will now be accommodated with special examination arrangements.
The arrangement was facilitated through the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Education.
Led by Minister Julius Ogamba, the Ministry of Sports under Kipchumba Murkomen, and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) chaired by Nick Mwendwa.
Their cooperation has ensured that the players can fulfill their academic and athletic commitments simultaneously.
The Junior Starlets have been placed in Group C of the World Cup, a challenging group that includes strong teams from Korea, Mexico, and England.
Head coach Mildred Cheche has stated that the team is ramping up their training and is focused on performing well in the competition.
Cheche expressed optimism about the team’s prospects and their ability to compete effectively against formidable opponents.
This development highlights a significant step in supporting student-athletes in Kenya, balancing their educational responsibilities with international sports commitments.
