In a bid to foster community-driven change, Lydia Wamoyo, a landlord in Korogocho, took to the airwaves of Koch FM to rally fellow landlords and residents toward a cleaner and more peaceful neighborhood.
Speaking passionately on the local radio station, Lydia emphasized the importance of cooperation in transforming Korogocho for the better.
Encouraging residents to prioritize cleanliness, Lydia pointed out that the old Korogocho should not be compared to the current state of the neighborhood.
She stressed that maintaining peace is crucial for improving the area, even advocating for a change in street names as a symbol of progress.
Waste management emerged as a significant challenge not only in Korogocho but across the country, with the efforts of the Nairobi County government falling short.
Despite these challenges, Lydia remains optimistic about the potential for positive change through collective action.
Acknowledging the efforts of young people in Korogocho who have been actively involved in street cleaning initiatives, Lydia highlighted the importance of such activities in steering youth away from drugs and illegal activities.
She commended organizations like Komb Green Solutions for their role in promoting environmental awareness and cleanliness in the community.
In line with these efforts, the UN-Habitat recently announced a call for proposals to establish a municipal solid waste collection and recovery system in Korogocho, aiming to enhance stakeholders’ coordination and infrastructure improvements.
With organizations like Clean Up Kenya making significant strides in waste recovery projects, there is hope for a cleaner Nairobi.
In 2023 alone, Clean Up Kenya conducted 13 community cleanups, recovering over 200 tons of waste, including plastics, with the support of volunteers and community groups.
As Nairobi’s population continues to grow, so does the challenge of waste management.
However, Lydia remains steadfast in her belief that with collective action and community involvement, Korogocho can overcome these challenges and emerge as a cleaner and more vibrant neighborhood.
In conclusion, Lydia’s call for cooperation and collective action serves as a reminder that the responsibility for maintaining a clean and healthy environment lies with each individual. By working together, residents, landlords, and organizations can contribute to the realization of Nairobi’s vision as ‘The Green City in the Sun.
