KTN News journalist Hamza Yussuf’s life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis.
He was rushed to a hospital in Garissa for immediate treatment, but his condition worsened when doctors discovered that his appendix had ruptured, requiring emergency surgery.
The situation escalated into a six-hour operation, after which Hamza found himself in a male ward, beginning a challenging recovery process.
After spending 11 days in the hospital, Hamza initially felt optimistic about a quick recovery.
However, a month later, he began to experience complications.
Upon consulting his family doctor, he learned that the surgeon had failed to use a necessary mesh during the operation, resulting in an incisional hernia.
The condition caused one side of his stomach to swell, while the other side appeared hollow. This painful setback dashed his hopes of returning to work soon.
The doctor recommended another surgery, but Hamza had to endure a long wait of three years before the corrective procedure could take place.
Reflecting on this period, Hamza described those years as the hardest of his life, as he had to limit his work and travel, putting his career on hold to focus on his health.
While some colleagues misunderstood his situation, assuming he had become redundant, Hamza was grateful for the support and understanding he received from a few loyal editors and friends.
Though some family members suggested taking legal action against the hospital for the mistake, Hamza chose a path of forgiveness.
Guided by his faith, he trusted in God’s plan and embraced the values of patience and charity, which are central to Islam.
Finally, on December 6, 2024, Hamza underwent the long-awaited corrective surgery.
The procedure was a success, and he is now recovering. Reflecting on his journey, Hamza expressed profound gratitude:
“Words cannot express the gratitude I feel, to God, for giving me another chance; to my family and friends for their constant prayers and encouragement; and to the Standard Media Group (KTN News editors), who supported me during my lowest moments.”
