Staff at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) staged a protest on Monday over the suspension of their medical cover, which they claim has left them and their dependents without access to health services.
The workers are demanding the immediate reinstatement of their medical cover and reimbursement for medical expenses they have incurred.
If their demands are not met, they have warned they will withdraw their services.
The protesting employees also accused the hospital’s board of interfering with the facility’s operations.
They specifically criticized the appointment of Irungu Kamau to replace Ahmed Dagane, calling it a flawed decision.
Additionally, the medics accused the management of failing to honor the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) previously signed with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
“The management has also disregarded the timelines set by the Ministry of Labour’s conciliator after the strike notice issued on September 9, 2024.
As KUTRRH employees, we demand the immediate disbandment of the current Board, which has outlived its usefulness,” the staff said.
They further called for the establishment of a caretaker board to facilitate the selection of a new board capable of continuing the hospital’s growth and development.
The employees are now appealing to Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa to intervene and save the institution from a board they claim is focused on self-enrichment at the expense of both employees and patient care.
