A senior officer from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) died early Monday morning when his Toyota RAV4 veered off the road and plunged into the Mwachome River in Msambweni, Kwale County.
Msambweni Police Chief Francis Gachoki confirmed that the incident occurred just before 7 a.m.
The officer was traveling from Msambweni to Likoni when his vehicle lost control near the bridge connecting Diani and Tiwi.
The car rolled several times before landing in the riverbed, and the officer was ejected during the crash.
Chief Gachoki noted that the officer was likely heading to work, as personal items, including his uniform, were discovered among the wreckage.
The car was later towed to the Diani Police Station for further examination.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the officer was the only occupant of the vehicle.
The accident caused a temporary disruption of traffic on the Likoni-Lungalunga highway as locals gathered around the site.
Some onlookers attempted to steal the officer’s gun and other valuables before the police arrived to secure the area.
The officer’s body has been transported to the Aga Khan Hospital morgue in Mombasa County. The police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
