Lang’ata Member of Parliament Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has strongly criticized the recent salary adjustments implemented by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), portraying them as a deliberate move against lawmakers amidst growing public discontent.
In August 2023, SRC unveiled a revised salary structure for all state officials, excluding the President and Deputy President, marking the third cycle of reviews.
These adjustments officially took effect from July 1, 2024.
However, Jalang’o has joined a chorus of legislators who have vehemently opposed these increments, citing the current socio-economic crisis gripping the nation.
Expressing his disapproval on social media, Jalang’o stated, “There are aspects that appear orchestrated! We are facing a crisis, and SRC proposes a mere increment of 14K! Do you want us to be attacked and perish for you to be happy? I do not want it!”
The backlash against MPs has intensified following their majority approval of the tax proposals within the 2024 Finance Bill, sparking nationwide protests that resulted in vandalism and disruption of businesses linked to supportive legislators.
The public outcry compelled President William Ruto to wholly reject the Bill, sending it back to parliament for reconsideration.
The salary adjustments for legislators and state officials have fueled widespread indignation among Kenyans, emerging as a focal point of the protests demanding government accountability and reform.
President Ruto has responded by pledging stringent austerity measures to mitigate the financial implications arising from the Finance Bill’s rejection.
This includes plans to eliminate unconstitutional positions, such as that of the First Lady, while focusing on prioritized projects for the fiscal year 2024/2025.
Jalang’o’s critique underscores the contentious nature of the SRC’s decision amidst broader public discontent over economic policies and governance.
The ongoing debate reflects a critical juncture in Kenya’s political landscape, with stakeholders grappling to balance fiscal prudence and public expectations in a climate of heightened scrutiny.
