Kenyan football is in mourning following the sudden death of Austin Oduor, former Gor Mahia captain and Harambee Stars defender, at his home in Mumias.
Oduor, celebrated for leading Gor Mahia to victory in the historic 1987 season with the Nelson Mandela Cup win, has left an indelible mark on the sport in Kenya.
The late Oduor was the father of former Harambee Stars goalkeeper Arnold Origi, and brother to Mike Okoth, a prominent Harambee Stars player who represented Kenya at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
One of the notable figures mourning his passing is Eliud Owallo, former ICT Cabinet Secretary and ardent Gor Mahia fan.
Owallo took to X to share his sadness, recalling a recent visit by Oduor and other ex-footballers to his home in Asembo.
In his tribute, Owallo highlighted Oduor’s efforts in grassroots football and his role in the Gor Mahia Legends’ welfare fund.
“It is with profound shock that I learned of the passing of Austin ‘Makamu’ Oduor, a true Kenyan soccer legend,” wrote Owallo.
“He was more than a football icon; he was a mentor, friend, and elder brother. His influence will not be forgotten.”
He extended condolences to the Origi family, friends, and the Kenyan football fraternity, honoring Oduor as one of Kenya’s most respected and disciplined players.
