A joint task force has confiscated a significant quantity of second-generation liquor brands in Mwala as part of the ongoing effort to combat the sale of illicit alcohol.
According to Machakos County Commissioner Josephine Ouko, who addressed the press at the County Commander’s office, the liquor was seized following the interception of two vehicles transporting it to Machakos town.
“Our officers tracked these vehicles from Kangundo and intercepted them in Mwala,” Ouko stated.
She revealed that a Toyota Probox was found carrying 100 boxes of illegal alcohol, while the second vehicle was transporting 121 boxes, each containing 24 bottles.
“Some of these boxes bore labels from legitimate companies, which were apparently being used to conceal the illicit liquor,” Ouko explained.
She reassured the public that security forces in the county are vigilant and are actively pursuing all individuals involved in this illegal trade.
In an effort to stem the spread of harmful substances and illegal brews in the community, Ouko announced the temporary closure of bars in Machakos until the renewal of licenses.
She mentioned ongoing collaboration with the county government to conduct thorough inspections of bars and issue new licenses accordingly.
“We aim for Machakos County to uphold integrity in business practices to safeguard our citizens,” Ouko emphasized.
She commended the public for their cooperation, citing numerous tips provided to security forces, leading to over 2000 arrests across the county.
Ouko issued a stern warning against the continuation of the illicit second-generation liquor trade, highlighting the threats posed by its manufacturers.
The drivers of the intercepted vehicles have been arrested and will face charges in court, while efforts to apprehend the producers of the illegal alcohol are ongoing.
