National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has firmly refuted claims regarding an impeachment motion targeting Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking in Siaya, Alego Usonga, Ichung’wah asserted that no Member of Parliament has initiated any efforts to gather signatures for such a motion.
“As the Majority Leader, I can assure Kenyans that there have been no plans for impeachment against the Deputy President,” he stated.
Ichung’wah stressed that impeachment motions are constitutional tools intended for oversight of state officers, including both the President and the Deputy President.
He emphasized that should any member believe that the President has acted unlawfully or unconstitutionally, they are free to propose an impeachment motion, which would be evaluated on its merits.
He also encouraged Gachagua to concentrate on advancing the objectives of the Kenya Kwanza government.
On Friday, Gachagua revealed that he had approached President William Ruto to discuss the rumored impeachment plot.
The President dismissed these concerns, asserting that no one would pursue such an agenda.
“The President told me he had no knowledge of any such motion, describing it as foolish and stating that it could destabilize the country,” Gachagua shared during an interview on Citizen TV.
He added that following their conversation, the President convened a meeting with MPs, effectively putting the matter to rest.
President Ruto had previously intervened to halt an earlier attempt to remove Gachagua, urging MPs to reconsider their plans amid ongoing protests from the Gen Z demographic.
