In a commendable act of heroism, Majority Leader in the National Assembly, Kimani Ichungwah, has extended his support to the courageous residents of Korogocho who risked their lives to rescue a 14-year-old girl swept away by floodwaters during the recent flooding crisis in the country.
Michael Njehu, Haron Ng’anga, Benjamin Muoki, Chris Kamau, Antony Mwigai, and Dennis Mwangi demonstrated exceptional bravery by springing into action upon learning of the girl’s perilous situation.
Despite the inherent dangers, they navigated the treacherous waters, inching closer to the girl who clung to a tree amidst the raging current.
Their valiant efforts, however, came at a grave cost, as two other residents tragically lost their lives while attempting the rescue.
Undeterred by the perilous conditions, the six men persevered and succeeded in rescuing the girl.
Explaining their strategy, one of the heroes shared, “The reason we held ourselves in a single file wading into the water is because that way, the water could not carry us as opposed to walking into it alone. Alone, you’d be light and vulnerable to the force of the water.”
Moved by their selflessness, Ichungwah met with the men and Margaret Mwihaki, who bravely recounted the harrowing rescue on video.
“We were not afraid. We could hear the cries and prayers of our mothers and the girl’s life at stake. We gathered courage to do what was necessary,” one of the men recounted.
Expressing his gratitude, Ichungwah commended their extraordinary bravery and pledged to support them by facilitating vocational training.
This initiative aims to equip them with essential life skills, empowering them to sustain themselves and make meaningful contributions to their community’s progress.
Ichungwah’s acknowledgment of their bravery underscores the importance of recognizing and honoring acts of selflessness and heroism within communities, serving as a beacon of inspiration for others to emulate.
