Man Dies After Being Buried By Soil While Fetching Water In Kitui

A 46-year-old man died after being buried under a heap of soil when part of a riverbank collapsed as he searched for drinking water in Kitui County.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, September 14, 2026, in Naviani Village, Tiva Sub-location, Kitui Central Sub-County.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Patrick Mutunga Mutemwa, was searching for water beneath the surface when a section of the riverbank gave way, crushing and completely burying him.

His younger brother, who reported the incident, and a handful of other men managed to remove Mutemwa from the debris.

They rushed him to the Kitui County Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police officers arrived at the scene at approximately 7 p.m. and commenced investigations into the incident.

And a 28-year-old man drowned in River Kibisi in Bungoma County after reportedly suffering an epileptic seizure while bathing.

The incident occurred on Monday, September 14, 2026, at around 5:30 p.m. in Kuywa Location, Mukuyuni Ward.

According to the police, the deceased, identified as Gilbert Nangaka, was bathing in the river when he suffered the seizure and drowned.

Police officers who visited the scene found his naked body partially submerged in the water, with his clothes lying beside the river.

The report indicated that Nangaka had a history of epilepsy and was allegedly without assistance when he suffered the sudden seizure.

The scene was photographed, and the body was retrieved and transferred to Chebukaka Mission Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

Authorities are expected to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the death.
