The Bomet County Government‘s disaster management team has launched a search operation for a man who reportedly leaped into a swollen river following a dispute at a drinking establishment in the Kipsuter area.
Allegedly, the deceased was subjected to mockery by his drinking companions, who taunted him for his perceived lack of fighting prowess, prompting him to contemplate suicide.
According to Mr. Paul Sang, the victim’s uncle, articles of clothing suspected to belong to the deceased were discovered at the Chepkulo River, the direction he was observed heading towards after the altercation.
Reportedly, the situation escalated when one of the drinking buddies threatened physical violence, suggesting a test of strength to determine who would receive more alcohol.
Despite attempts by a friend to defuse the tension, the victim remained resolute in his decision to leave the establishment, eventually making his way towards the river, approximately a kilometer away.
Area Chief Joseah Ng’eno confirmed that investigations are currently underway to ascertain the sequence of events leading up to the incident.
County disaster officer Stanley Mutai disclosed that an unidentified male body was spotted being swept away by swift currents, roughly 25 kilometers downstream from the location where the incident occurred.
The search operation, coordinated by the Bomet County Government’s disaster management team, involves local authorities and volunteers scouring the riverbanks and surrounding areas in a bid to locate the missing individual.
Residents in the vicinity have expressed shock and concern over the incident, highlighting the need for heightened awareness on mental health issues and the importance of addressing conflicts in a peaceful manner.
Efforts to retrieve the body and provide closure to the victim’s family are ongoing, with authorities urging members of the public to come forward with any relevant information that may aid in the search and investigation process.
