A man believed to be about 20 years old was found dead after allegedly entering a gold mine in Migori County in an attempt to steal gold ore.
Another man was found unconscious inside the mine and rushed to Reocare Hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred at Mwengezeko area in Kuria West Sub-County on Saturday.
According to the police, the two men had allegedly entered the mine at night to steal gold ore before becoming trapped underground.
A security guard at the mine told police that at about 2am he heard sounds coming from inside the mine.
Upon checking, he reportedly saw two people underground and raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to respond.
The two were urged to come out of the mine but allegedly refused and instead went deeper underground.
At about 7.30am, mine workers arriving for duty discovered one of the men hanging from a rope ordinarily used by workers to descend into the mine.
The deceased, whose identity had not been established, was estimated to be about 20 years old. His body was retrieved with the rope still around his neck.
The man, who was identified as a former worker at the mine, was found unconscious and taken to Reocare Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.
The deceased’s body was removed to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the two men became trapped inside the mine and the circumstances leading to the death.
And police in Kisumu are investigating the death of a three-month-old baby who was found unattended at her father’s house in the Railways area.
The baby died after her parents took her to Inuka Africa Hospital in Kisumu on Saturday morning.
A witness told police that he left work at the Railways area at about 4.30pm on Friday and went to the mess at the Railways Shipyard.
When he returned to his house at about 9.30pm, he found his three-month-old daughter unattended and crying.
The witness reportedly attended to the baby and tried to contact her mother, Sarah Akinyi, so that she could pick up the child.
The baby had experienced medical problems since birth.
The mother reportedly arrived at the house at about 5am on Saturday, after which the couple took the baby to Inuka Africa Hospital for medical attention.
The child was, however, pronounced dead at the facility, and the parents were advised to report the matter to Kisumu Central Police Station.
Police officers visited the scene, which was subsequently processed by Crime Scene Investigation officers from Kisumu.
The baby’s body had no visible injuries and was moved to Kisumu District Hospital Mortuary pending an autopsy.
Police said the cause of death had not been established and investigations were ongoing.
