A man has been tragically swept away by floodwaters in Kaptembwa, Nakuru West, where heavy rains have caused significant disruption and displaced numerous families.
Sammy Tarus Maiyo, a Catholic Catechist at St. Patrick Church, Ngata, was engulfed by the storm while traveling on his motorcycle at the Eveready roundabout along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.
Witnesses report that on Tuesday evening, as he was heading home, his motorbike was overtaken by the surging waters, which pushed him into a deep gully.
According to local resident Patrice Ondiek, a search for Maiyo commenced shortly after the rains subsided around 10:00 p.m.
His motorcycle was found at the scene, but his body was eventually discovered downstream at midnight. It was subsequently transported to Nakuru County Mortuary.
Maiyo, who served as a senior catechist at St. Patrick’s Ngata Parish and chaired the catechists of Nakuru Diocese, is remembered as a dedicated community leader.
The Eveready area, extending to the densely populated Githima and Kaptembwa neighborhoods, is known for its flood vulnerability.
Stormwater from the Menengai Forest, Kiamunyi, and London areas converges in this region before flowing into the Ndarugu River.
This recent flooding incident follows a similar event from less than three months ago, during the April/May rainy season, when over 30 families were displaced.
