Police in Embu are investigating a suspected murder-suicide after a 35-year-old man was found dead alongside his 18-year-old wife in Mbeere South.
The bodies of Erick Munene Wambui and his wife, Veronica Mbenge Mueni, were discovered at Wikase Village in Gachuriri Sub-location on Wednesday evening.
According to police, the incident was reported at about 5:30pm.
Police officers visited the scene and found Mr Munene hanging from a mango tree, while his wife’s body lay a few metres away.
The couple, who worked as casual labourers, had been staying at the homestead of a local.
Their bodies were discovered by Agnes Waruguru, who had gone to inspect her miraa farm, which she had leased from Mr Mwaniki.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had travelled to Kiumbu Village in Kirinyaga County on Tuesday to meet the man’s grandmother and discuss a family disagreement.
They reportedly left the grandmother’s home at about 10pm.
Investigators further established that earlier that day, Munene had allegedly taken his friend Nicholas Njoroge’s phone and recorded himself threatening to take his own life, reportedly citing what he described as a lack of love from his parents.
Police suspect Munene may have assaulted and strangled his wife before taking his own life.
Investigators noted apparent defence injuries on the woman’s right hand and left thigh, as well as blood oozing from her eyes and nose.
Munene is suspected to have subsequently hanged himself using a shawl, commonly known as a leso.
Crime Scene Investigators processed the scene before the bodies were removed to Embu Level Five Hospital mortuary, where they were preserved pending postmortem examinations.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths are ongoing.
