The Eldoret High Court heard that Agnes Tirop, a celebrated two-time World 10,000-meter bronze medalist, had expressed concerns for her safety months before her tragic death.
Tirop’s coach, Joseph Cheromei, testified that Giani Demadona, her Italian athletics manager, had raised alarm over her safety due to a secret relationship with a man known only as Mr. Sawe.
Cheromei recounted that in June 2021, Demadona asked him to bring Tirop to the training camp as she prepared for upcoming races in Valencia, Spain, and Tokyo, Japan.
Demadona reportedly feared that Tirop’s personal relationships might endanger her.
Tragically, on October 13, 2021, Tirop was found dead at her home near Iten in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
Her husband, Ibrahim Rotich, stands accused of her murder but has pleaded not guilty and is currently out on a bond of shs. 400,000.
An autopsy revealed that the athlete died from injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.
The trial will resume on November 5, 2024, with three additional witnesses expected to provide testimony as the court seeks justice for Tirop’s untimely death.
