Martha Karua, leader of the Narc Kenya party, has assured that the opposition coalition will remain resilient even in the absence of ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at the party headquarters in Nairobi, Karua emphasized that the coalition’s commitment to fighting for Kenyans’ rights and holding the government accountable will continue unabated.
Karua wished Odinga success in his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship but affirmed that her stance on critiquing President William Ruto would persist, particularly when constitutional violations occur.
“The role of the opposition does not depend on Mr. Odinga’s presence or absence.
We remain dedicated to our responsibilities and will continue to challenge the government when necessary,” Karua stated.
She reaffirmed the party’s support for victims of police brutality and kidnapping, emphasizing that Narc Kenya will persist in its role as a watchdog.
“We are accustomed to being in the opposition and will continue to manage the truth, cooperating with allies who share our commitment,” Karua added.
The party also vowed to maintain pressure on President Ruto until those responsible for the abuse of protesters during anti-government demonstrations are held accountable.
“We demand justice for human rights violations, deaths, and attacks on citizens and the media.
We will not accept or forget these abuses, and we expect the authorities to address the officers caught on camera breaking the law,” Karua said.
This statement comes amid Narc Kenya’s ongoing consideration of withdrawing from the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition, following Odinga’s decision to join the government.
The party plans to submit evidence of police brutality to the African Commission on Human Rights (ACHPR), the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, and other relevant bodies.
Karua also criticized the proposed funding model for higher education, calling it a betrayal of Kenyans and a threat to social and economic equality if implemented without public input.
“It not only violates the Constitution but also exacerbates inequality,” she said.
