Kylian Mbappe received the prestigious title of France’s Player of the Year on Monday during a ceremony held in Paris, marking the culmination of his illustrious seven-season tenure with Paris Saint-Germain.
At 25, Mbappe secured the accolade for the fifth consecutive time as the best player in Ligue 1 at the UNFP (French Players’ Union) Trophies gala, following a season where his prowess led to 44 goals across all competitions for PSG.
Confirming his departure from PSG at the end of the campaign with the expiration of his contract, Mbappe is widely expected to join Real Madrid.
Reflecting on his imminent departure, Mbappe stated, “It is a page that is turning, a chapter of my life that is going to close.”
Expressing fondness for Ligue 1, he added, “Ligue 1 will always have an important place in my life.
It is the only league I have known in my career up to now.”
Mbappe, who scored in his final home game for PSG, emphasized, “I have always tried to be an honorable representative of this league.”
Acknowledging the upcoming changes, he noted, “I will miss it for sure. It is a part of my life that is coming to an end. What is coming next is very exciting but that is something else.”
Mbappe’s exemplary performance was evident as he outshone other nominees for the award, which was voted for by his fellow players and presented by Marie-Jose Perec, the French former 200m and 400m Olympic champion.
His PSG teammate Ousmane Dembele, alongside Pierre Lees-Melou of Brest, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Marseille, and Edon Zhegrova of Lille, were among the contenders for the title.
In addition to Mbappe’s recognition, PSG’s dominance was further highlighted in other categories, with Warren Zaire-Emery named young player of the season and Gianluigi Donnarumma hailed as the best goalkeeper.
Eric Roy of Brest was honored as coach of the year for his role in guiding the modest Brittany club to European qualification for the first time in their history.
With one game remaining, they are assured of finishing at least fifth, securing a Europa League spot.
