A Member of County Assembly Friday called on the government to lower the charges for persons registration after they were raised recently.
Matungulu West MCA Raphael Lucky Nzau who is the MCA made the call at Kisukioni market in his ward during an exercise for the registration of birth certificates and identity cards.
The ward is in Machakos County.
The MCA said that many people were economically depressed and called on the government to reconsider reverting to earlier charges.
“It is too costly for some people to afford the payment and the government should consider reviewing the charges of civil registration which have gone up,” said the MCA.
He said that the registration of birth certificate had gone up from Sh150 to Sh500.
For one to get an identification card a new one Nzau said had been put at Sh300 while earlier one it was free.
“Previously one had to pay Sh100 to replace a lost identity card but now one has to pay Sh1 000 to get it,” added Nzau.
Other areas that the exercise was held in the ward were Nguluni market and at Mutalia dispensary.
On the impending teachers strike scheduled to begin on Monday, August 26 when schools reopen for the third term over salaries matter, Nzau urged teachers to refrain from the strike and settle for settlement of the matter through dialogue with the Teachers service commission (TSC) and their two unions KUPPET and KNUT.
He said if the strike takes place the people who will suffer more are children but at the same time urged the government to seriously listen and address the teachers demands which they had agreed upon.
“As much as we are calling for dialogue between teachers through KUPPET and KNUT with the government through TSC the government must also fulfill the promises it entered with teachers however long it takes,” emphasized Nzau.
