A mentally challenged man attacked and killed an elderly woman in a church in Kuria, Migori County.
Police identified the deceased as Pauline Akumu, 68.
Witnesses and police said the woman was in a church in Giosahi village together with other worshippers when a man said to be mentally ill were brought there for prayers on Thursday night.
The mother of the man brought him to the church for prayers to heal, locals said.
It was then the said patient excused himself and walked out of the church and returned while armed with bricks.
He came back with the bricks which he used to hit and seriously injured two of the worshipers including the deceased.
A male worshiper who was one of those attacked managed to escape leaving behind the elderly woman.
The mentally ill man continued to hit the woman with the stone, killing her at the scene.
Police who arrived at the scene said they found the body of the woman outside the church with severe head injuries.
The two bricks the suspect used in the attack were recovered and kept as exhibits, police said.
The suspect was arrested and placed in custody pending further action while the body was moved to the St. Akidivah
Mindira Mabera hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination.
Police later took the patient to the hospital as part of the probe into the incident.
