Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza found a moment of celebration on Wednesday afternoon after the High Court intervened to halt her removal.
The reprieve came after the Senate’s decision earlier in the day to approve her impeachment.
On Thursday morning, Mwangaza, who is serving her first term, took to social media to express her faith and draw solace from Biblical teachings.
“Your faith has what it takes to scatter whatever the enemy plans against you! Good morning and more Grace and Faith,” she wrote, reflecting her belief that faith can overcome challenges.
Following the Supreme Court’s temporary stay, Mwangaza shared her relief on Facebook, stating, “God is merciful.”
She also hinted at resuming her official duties by posting a photo from her office with the caption, “Close the closet, go away.”
The High Court’s ruling on Wednesday halted the Senate’s impeachment decision and blocked Senate Speaker Amason Kingi from publishing a Kenya Gazette Notice that would have declared a vacancy in the governor’s office.
The Senate’s impeachment vote saw 26 senators supporting the charge of serious constitutional violations, 26 backing the gross misconduct charge, and 27 endorsing the abuse of office accusation.
Out of 44 senators, 14 abstained or opposed the charges, with varying numbers supporting Mwangaza.
Speaker Kingi noted that the Senate had resolved to remove Mwangaza under Article 181 of the Constitution and related laws.
This is the third time Mwangaza has faced removal since her election in August 2022.
