The Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday the launch of “robust workplace mental wellness programs” aimed at supporting healthcare workers across the country.
This initiative comes in response to the tragic suicide of a medical intern, Desree Moraa Obwogi, at the Gatundu Level 5 Hospital in Kiambu County on Sunday.
Dr. Obwogi’s body was found in a residence she shared with a friend, located just a short distance from the hospital.
A suicide note obtained indicated that she had been struggling with issues related to her work environment.
Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa emphasized the importance of mental health support within the healthcare sector, stating that Dr. Obwogi’s death serves as a “stark reminder of the silent battles faced by many in the medical profession.”
She highlighted that the new wellness programs will be designed to reinforce support systems and ensure that individuals facing difficulties do not feel isolated.
The Ministry’s proactive approach seeks to address the mental health challenges that healthcare professionals often encounter, fostering an environment where they can seek help without stigma.
By implementing these comprehensive wellness initiatives, the Ministry aims to improve the overall mental well-being of healthcare workers and create a culture of support within medical facilities across the nation.
