Tragedy has befallen Kandongu village in Mutithi Ward, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, where a 53-year-old man was found dead in a well on his property after being reported missing.
David Mwangi’s family discovered his body in a 15-foot well used for farming after he went missing around 1 p.m. on Monday.
His brother, Harrison Nyaga, conveyed the family’s sorrow, stating they had been searching for him since his wife reported him missing.
“We were devastated to find his lifeless body in the well. We had been looking for him since his wife said he was nowhere to be found,” Nyaga expressed.
Local resident William Kamocere, who arrived shortly after the alarm was raised, reported that a villager discovered Mwangi’s body while fetching water early that morning.
“The individual who found David Mwangi’s body immediately contacted his wife, who began to cry and alerted the neighbors,” Kamocere recounted.
Felistas Gitau, the acting chief of Mutithi, confirmed the incident, mentioning that she was informed by the village head shortly after the body was discovered.
Resident Esther Muthoni pointed out that while wells in the area are often used for farming, many remain uncovered.
“We use these wells for horticultural crops, but unfortunately, they are frequently left open. We need to be more cautious,” she urged.
The body was retrieved by local residents along with police officers from Kiamaciri Police Station and has since been taken to Kibugi Funeral Home for a postmortem examination.
