A 23-year-old Catholic nun trainee, Yvonne Jirangwa, who went missing from Rongo Catholic Church on Thursday, October 24, has been found dead in a sewer pit within the convent grounds at Rongo Parish.
According to police, they are currently investigating both murder and drowning as possible causes of death.
The body was discovered by a nun who was heading to the farm and noticed something unusual in the sewer pit.
Homa Bay Diocese Vicar General Gabriel Atieno confirmed that Jirangwa’s disappearance was reported to Rongo police on the same day she went missing, following unsuccessful attempts by the sisters to locate her.
The body was discovered on Sunday, October 27, in the afternoon, according to police and witnesses.
Rongo Sub-County Police Commander Salim Fundi said officers had been involved in the search efforts after the church reported her missing.
The body was retrieved and taken to Rosewood Hospital Mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation.
In a separate incident, a 50-year-old man tragically fell to his death in a 75-foot well in Mukonyo village, Kirinyaga County, around 2 a.m. on Monday.
According to family members and police, the man was searching for a missing goat with his cousin after leaving a bar when he received news that the goat had been found dead.
Upon reaching the site, the man slipped and fell into the uncovered well while his cousin went to fetch a torch for better visibility.
The cousin, upon returning, heard cries for help coming from the well.
Emergency services, including a fire engine, were dispatched to retrieve the man’s body, which was then transported to a nearby mortuary.
Police are investigating the incident further.
