The Port of Mombasa recently received the MS Ambience cruise vessel from the United Kingdom, embarking on its maiden voyage to the coastal shores after departing from Victoria Port in Seychelles.
Bearing 1700 passengers from various nationalities, the ship promises two days of exploration in the coastal town.
This ceremonial welcome highlights the concerted efforts between the Government and the tourism sector in showcasing Kenya’s vibrant coastal offerings to global visitors.
It also signifies a significant achievement for the Port’s escalating prominence as a favored stop for international cruise liners, a trend that has seen a continuous stream of vessels since the circuit’s inception in September last year.
This surge has been facilitated by the inauguration of the ultra-modern Cruise Terminal, developed by the Authority to elevate passenger experience at the Port of Mombasa, cementing Kenya’s status not only as a hub for cargo operations but also for cruise tourism across Africa.
The port anticipates more vessel arrivals before the conclusion of the cruise season next month. Following its stay in Mombasa, MS Ambience will set sail for Durban.
The arrival of MS Ambience, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, received a warm reception from Tourism Principal Secretary, John Ololtuaa, and officials from the Kenya Tourism Board.
According to Ololtuaa, the cruise ship is undertaking a 132-day global cruise, making its 2-day stop in Mombasa particularly impactful compared to other ships with shorter docking times.
“The tourists will explore Tsavo and Amboseli and also tour Mombasa city, significantly boosting the economy of the County,” expressed the PS.
He noted that since the year’s commencement, the port has greeted four cruise ships, bringing a total of 8,366 visitors, including tourists and crew members.
Ololtuaa extended his gratitude to the Government and the Port for their refurbishment efforts, stressing their pivotal role in enhancing the port’s capacity to host visitors.
“These enhancements have elevated the port’s capability to accommodate up to 140,000 visitors annually, accentuating its burgeoning reputation as a premier cruise destination,” he concluded.
