The number of registered births and deaths in Nandi County is expected to increase following the opening of a new registration office in Tinderet.
Immigration and Citizen Services Principal Secretary Julius Bitok said the office will be a welcome relief to area residents who have been traveling all the way to Kapsabet and Nandi Hills towns for birth and death certificates.
The PS who opened the new Civil Registration Office challenged area residents to take advantage of the facility to improve on the current registration statistics in the area and to be able to benefit from government services and resources.
“Registration of births and deaths provides a strong foundation for a nation to plan its development programs and improve service delivery to citizens from a statistical standpoint,” he said.
He urged locals to take advantage of the six months window from the time of occurrence of births and deaths to have them registered and certified for free.
“All births and deaths occurring in Kenya are required to be reported and registered within six months from the date of occurrence. Registration of births and deaths done within six months of occurrence is free of charge.”
Currently, at least 31 out of 100 births and 66 out of 100 deaths respectively go unreported in Nandi County.

The new registry becomes the fourth office in Nandi County for the more than 800,000 residents and brings to 142 the total number of CRS offices in the country.
Area legislator Julius Melly asked chiefs, assistant chiefs, and village elders to residents without birth certificates and those who with deceased family members have applied for the relevant documents.
Birth certificates are important for the enrolment of learners in schools and enable access to vital identification documents such as national identity cards and passports, while death certificates are used to facilitate succession and inheritance.
