Today marks the commencement of the impeachment trial for Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, setting the stage for a parliamentary showdown.
Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, the motion’s sponsor, alleges threats to his life as the 10-member committee of the National Assembly convenes to consider the case.
Chaired by Marsabit Woman Rep Naomi Waqo, the committee faces the dual task of assessing the accusations against the CS and addressing concerns over the MP’s security, along with preliminary objections from the CS’s legal team.
During the pre-trial hearing, Wamboka voiced concerns about his safety, citing instances of being followed by unidentified individuals.
Despite these challenges, he remains resolute, emphasizing the importance of upholding Kenya’s integrity.
Wamboka calls for measures to safeguard lawmakers who initiate such motions.
The committee faces tight deadlines, aiming to present its report by the following Monday’s special sitting convened by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
Hearings are scheduled for three consecutive days, with the committee retreating on Friday to draft its findings.
Represented by Senior Counsel John Khaminwa, Wamboka intends to substantiate his case against Linturi, relying on testimony from eight witnesses, including farmers and experts.
Documents signed by Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Rono are key evidence, with Wamboka urging the committee to summon him for questioning. Additionally, he seeks testimony from the chief operating officer of KEL Chemicals to support his allegations.
