Musalia Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary, has been designated as the acting Interior Cabinet Secretary, filling the role until President William Ruto appoints a permanent successor.
This transition follows the appointment of Kithure Kindiki, the former Interior CS, as Deputy President, replacing Rigathi Gachagua.
In conjunction with this development, Mudavadi has announced that Friday, November 1, will be a public holiday in honor of Kindiki’s swearing-in as Deputy President.
This announcement was made in a gazette notice issued on October 31, which cites the holiday under the Public Holidays Act.
The gazette states: “For the general information of the public, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, exercising the powers granted by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, declares Friday, November 1, 2024, to be a public holiday.”
The ceremony to swear in Kindiki will be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (K.I.C.C.) in Nairobi, commencing at 10:00 AM.
To ensure the smooth running of the event, Chief of Staff Felix Kosei has established a 24-member committee, led by Cabinet Secretary Mercy Wanjau.
On October 18, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula announced to the House that President Ruto had nominated Kindiki for the Deputy President position.
This nomination aligns with Article 149 of the Constitution, which mandates that the President select a candidate for a vacant Deputy President role within 14 days of the vacancy arising.
A three-judge panel recently lifted previous conservatory orders that had prevented Kindiki from assuming office, allowing the swearing-in ceremony to proceed as planned.
