Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, is getting ready for an important step.
They want to try a special brain implant on people who have problems moving because of paralysis.
They got the green light from a group of experts to start looking for volunteers.
These volunteers should have paralysis caused by problems in their neck’s spinal cord or a condition called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
We don’t know yet how many people will be a part of this study, but it’s going to take around six years to finish.
Here’s how it works: They’re going to use a robot to put a tiny computer device into a part of the brain that helps us think about moving.
Neuralink’s first goal is to make it possible for people to control a computer just by thinking about it.
Imagine moving a cursor on a screen or typing on a keyboard just with your thoughts!
At first, Neuralink wanted to test this device on 10 patients, but they had to talk to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the organization that makes sure medical stuff is safe, because of some worries about safety.
We don’t know how many patients the FDA said yes to in the end.
Elon Musk has big dreams for Neuralink.
He thinks this technology can help with many things, like obesity, autism, depression, and schizophrenia.
In May, the FDA gave them permission to try this on humans, even though they were already being watched for how they treated animals during their tests.
But, even if this brain device works well and is safe, it might still take more than ten years before it’s ready for everyone to use, according to experts.
