In Ruaka, Kiambu County, on a Wednesday night, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) took action, seizing 750 liters of ethanol.
Alongside officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the National Police Service (NPS), they also confiscated 40 drums capable of holding around 250 liters of ethanol each.
NACADA issued a statement on Thursday expressing concern that these empty drums likely once contained ethanol intended for illegal consumption.
“Drinking this kind of alcohol is dangerous and can have severe consequences.
Counterfeit or unlawfully produced alcohol can cause blindness and even death,” the statement warned.

The anti-drug authority is determined to intensify efforts to combat the consumption of illegal substances, affirming that those caught will face legal consequences.
The public is urged to report any suspicious activities related to the manufacturing, distribution, or sale of alcohol and drugs to authorities via the toll-free line 1192.
This action follows a recent tragedy in Kangai village, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, where ten people lost their lives and five others suffered blindness after consuming illicit liquor at a local bar.
On Tuesday, six family members died, while five others lost their sight due to the same substance.
Four more individuals passed away while receiving medical treatment at local hospitals.
The suspected bar owner, John Muriithi Karaya, also known as ‘California,’ has been arrested and will be held for 20 days pending further investigation.
