Nairobi City County has implemented a range of measures in response to the ongoing crisis of heavy rains and floods affecting the region.
Yassin, in a press statement, announced the establishment of a county task force and the full activation of the Nairobi City County Public Health Emergency Operations Center (PHEOC) to ensure efficient coordination during the crisis.
According to Yassin, the floods have caused significant displacement, affecting approximately 147,061 individuals across an estimated 20,968 households.
To address this, the county has established 16 camps across its seven sub-counties, with an additional three camps set up in Embakasi East to accommodate the growing number of affected individuals.
The county has prioritized water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) efforts by providing aqua tabs for water treatment, conducting water quality monitoring, and undertaking extensive cleaning and disinfection activities in affected areas.
Schools within Nairobi City County have also been impacted, with seven schools in Kibra Sub County reporting varying degrees of damage.
St. Elizabeth Primary School in Makadara Sub-County has been severely affected, with collapsed walls and issues with snakes on the premises.
Several schools in Dagoretti Sub-County have also faced challenges due to the ongoing rains, including New Day School, Rock Community Educational Center, Huduma School, Riri School, Kabiro Primary, and Kanungaga Friends School.
As the government postpones the opening of schools for the second term, efforts to restore the county’s infrastructure are underway, including drainage, sewer, and bridge repairs.
Surveillance and interventions, such as health education, search and rescue operations, camp setup, and food and non-food item distribution, are ongoing, with collaboration from key partners.
Bramwel Simiyu, Chief Officer of Disaster Management at the Nairobi City County Government, expressed commitment to supporting affected families and urged caution and prioritization of safety during these challenging times.
He also extended gratitude to partners for their collaborative efforts in ensuring the well-being of Nairobi’s residents.
