The National Construction Authority (NCA) has initiated an investigation into the collapse of a storey building under construction in Rongo town, Migori County.
In a statement released on Wednesday, December 25, the Authority announced that once the investigation is complete, it will take strict action against the building’s owners.
Although the construction site was closed at the time of the collapse, the incident resulted in six injuries, including two children and a security guard, all of whom were rushed to the hospital.
NCA confirmed that search and rescue operations are still ongoing to ensure any other affected individuals are located and assisted.
The Authority also revealed that construction had been suspended following a routine quality assurance inspection by its compliance team, which raised concerns about the building’s structural integrity.
After the suspension, the building owner was instructed to provide a structural integrity report before construction could resume.
However, the report had not been submitted at the time of the collapse.
“A detailed investigation will be conducted in the coming days to determine the actual cause of the failure of this development,” the NCA stated.
“Anyone found to have violated the law or disregarded lawful directions from a competent authority will face the full force of the law.”
Rongo Member of Parliament, Paul Abuor, along with other local leaders, arrived at the site shortly after the incident as rescue efforts continued.
Speaking to the press, Abuor confirmed that the exact number of people still trapped in the collapsed building had not yet been determined.
This incident follows another tragic event in Nairobi, where a seven-storey building in Kahawa West collapsed on October 20, injuring two people.
The building had been deemed unsafe, and tenants were ordered to vacate shortly before the collapse.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja confirmed that all the masons involved in repairs to the building’s cracks had been accounted for.
