Nine students from St. Aloys Mayenya Secondary School in Kisumu East Sub County were rushed to the hospital after sustaining injuries when strong winds caused by a heavy downpour damaged classrooms.
The incident occurred last evening during a severe storm that hit the region, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
Several other students also sustained minor injuries but were treated and discharged from St. Elizabeth Hospital in Chiga.
According to the school’s principal, Judith Atieno, the storm wreaked havoc on the school infrastructure, completely destroying two classrooms and the staff room.
She noted that while the affected students are now out of danger, the ordeal has left many students in shock and distress.
Despite the trauma, Atieno reassured parents and the school community that the situation is under control, with the injured students responding well to treatment.
The destruction was extensive, with roofs being blown off from the classrooms, leaving behind a significant trail of damage.
The affected students, along with their classmates, are currently recovering from the traumatic event, and efforts are being made to restore normalcy within the school.
In light of the extensive damage caused, the school administration is now appealing for assistance.
Principal Atieno emphasized the need for urgent support from well-wishers, the county government, and even the national government to ensure that the school can resume its normal learning activities as soon as possible.
She highlighted that the damage to the classrooms has disrupted the school’s operations, and without external support, it will be difficult for the school to recover quickly from the destruction.
As the school community rallies to overcome the disaster, it remains hopeful that help will come soon to restore the damaged facilities and ensure students can return to a safe learning environment.
