In the village of Silibwet in Nessuit, Njoro sub-county, local divers successfully retrieved the bodies of two girls who were swept away by floodwaters in river Ndarugu four days ago.
According to John Kirui, the chair of the local divers, the bodies of the sisters, Sharon Chepngetitch, 17, and Faith Cheptoo, 15, were discovered trapped under rocks, prolonging the retrieval process.
“Chepngetitch’s body was found a kilometer away from the site of the tragic accident while that of Cheptoo was found 500 meters away,” Kirui stated.
Kirui emphasized the need for training opportunities for local divers to enhance their skills and professionalism. He highlighted the challenges faced due to the lack of proper gear and the absence of professional divers among their ranks.
“We have our own challenges when retrieving bodies and fear slipping into the water,” Kirui explained, urging both levels of government to address their concerns.
Moreover, the divers appealed to the county government to construct a bridge for local residents, providing a safer alternative to crossing the river, especially during flood seasons.
Chief Douglas Mutai expressed relief that the search for the siblings had concluded, and arrangements were being made for their burial.
The bodies were taken to Egerton University mortuary.
In light of the ongoing floods, Mutai cautioned against crossing the river and advised utilizing the neighboring bridge until the waters recede.
