The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is calling upon motorists nationwide to exercise vigilance on the roads during the current rainy season, citing the perilous conditions posed by inclement weather.
NTSA Director General George Njao, in a recent press release, emphasized the importance of road safety amidst the rainy season.
He stated that traffic officers have been deployed with directives to monitor various road safety aspects such as drunk driving, speeding, and validating licenses and other essential documents across major highways.
“NTSA is committed to ensuring road safety, and in collaboration with the NPS, our officers will conduct compliance checks on major highways,” mentioned Director General Njao.
These checks encompass scrutinizing speed, verifying document authenticity, conducting random alcohol tests, and cracking down on overloaded vehicles and illegal Passenger Service Vehicles (PSVs), among other measures.
With heavy rainfall prevailing across the nation, NTSA has cautioned about the likelihood of flash floods and slippery roads, urging both pedestrians and motorists to exercise heightened caution.
Motorists are particularly advised to reduce speed and avoid flooded roads and riverbeds to mitigate the risk of accidents.
“We advise drivers to reduce speed as deposits on roads can create slippery surfaces, making it challenging to halt and heightening the risk of losing control,” expressed NTSA.
Instances of drivers navigating through hazardous conditions like flash floods and flooded roads have been observed, warranting increased caution.
NTSA further emphasized passenger responsibility in ensuring safety, urging them to speak up against unsafe driving practices.
Additionally, drivers are encouraged to take precautionary measures such as moving stalled vehicles off the road, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, and ensuring headlights are on for better visibility.
They should also drive at a slower pace to allow brakes to dry after encountering water.
Other safety recommendations include maintaining a firm grip on the steering wheel for optimal control, regularly inspecting and replacing worn-out tires, and for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, wearing bright clothing or reflector vests to enhance visibility and safety.
