Raila Odinga has termed the arrest of Controller of Budget Dr. Margaret Nyakango as a politically motivated witch hunt.
The leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party expressed his belief that Nyakango’s arrest was foreseeable, given her commitment to professionalism and integrity in an environment tainted by corruption and unscrupulous conduct.
“The arrest was always coming, in light of her determination to act professionally and with integrity in a regime infested by crooks and unprofessional conduct. It was a matter of when, not if Ms. Nyakango was going to be sent packing on frivolous and trumped-up charges to create room for a user-friendly holder of the office, who will support and sanitize the looting currently underway,” Odinga asserted.
Dr. Nyakango was arrested in Mombasa based on a complaint filed against her and ten others dating back to 2016.

The charges include conspiracy to defraud, forgery, and operating a Sacco without a license, among others.
Nyakango, along with her co-accused, including Jackson Ngure Wanjau, Susan Kendi, James Makena Wanyagi, John Muchira Kithaka, Jane Karuu Ndanvi, Muthoni Elphas, Joan Chumo, Mercy Ndura Mukora, Gregory Mwangangi Mailu, and Michael Kipkurui, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The accusations involve offenses under the Penal Code and the Sacco Societies Act, 2008.
The Director of Public Prosecutions approved the charges in a letter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on November 30. Subsequently, Nyakango was released on a cash bail of Sh500,000.
