Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has been appointed as the interim chair of the ODM Party’s Central Management Committee, one of the party’s key decision-making bodies.
This appointment comes in the wake of ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga‘s decision to step down from his leadership roles to focus on his campaign for the African Union (AU) Presidency, with elections set for February next year.
Nyong’o will lead the Central Management Committee until February 2025, overseeing critical decisions within the party.
ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna explained that, with Odinga’s focus on his AU Chairmanship bid, it is essential to ensure that the committee can continue its work in his absence.
Sifuna clarified that Nyong’o’s role is temporary and not an indication of a permanent leadership change.
“When Raila Odinga returns, he will resume leading meetings.
This interim arrangement is designed to prevent disruptions during his absence,” Sifuna stated.
Nyong’o, who previously served in the same role ten years ago during Odinga’s visit to the United States, is well-acquainted with the responsibilities of the position.
The internal dynamics of ODM have become more complex with Odinga’s retreat, as various party leaders vie for prominent roles.
Recently, Odinga expanded the party leadership by appointing Governors Simba Arati (Kisii),
Abdulswamad Nassir (Mombasa), and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as deputy party leaders, reflecting an effort to broaden the party’s leadership base amid the ongoing transitions.
