Recent operation conducted by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), one person, identified as Francis Kaiga, has been apprehended, and 1,020 kilograms of copper cables suspected to be owned by the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) were recovered in Nairobi.
The arrest occurred at a scrap metal yard located in Shallian along Enterprise Road on a Tuesday.
During the operation, DCI stated, “1,020kg of copper cables believed to be the property of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) were seized by detectives at a godown in Nairobi yesterday, in an operation where one suspect was arrested.”
The DCI is actively engaged in ongoing investigations to track down any accomplices associated with Francis Kaiga who are still evading capture.
KPLC, in collaboration with the DCI, initiated this joint effort in November to combat the rising incidents of transformer vandalism.
The power company witnessed a significant 46% surge in transformer destruction during the previous financial year, impacting 242 transformers—a notable increase from the 165 incidents reported in 2022.
Expressing confidence in the partnership with the DCI, KPLC stated, “We are confident that the partnership with the DCI will boost our capacity to proactively fight vandalism and other crimes through an intelligence-led approach.”
